Mixed-license font

Essenfont is not distributed under a single license. It is an assembly of glyphs from multiple donor fonts, each with its own license. The assembled font inherits the most restrictive term across all donors.

What that means for you

  • OFL-licensed donors (Noto, Lentariso, Kedebideri, UniHieroglyphica, etc.) — free to use, study, modify, and redistribute under the SIL Open Font License 1.1.
  • FSung-NC (Full-Sung by F.G. Wang) — non-commercial use only. This restriction applies to the CJK glyphs sourced from FSung (CJK Unified Ideographs, Extensions B–G, and related blocks). The build pipeline propagates this restriction into the output font's name table (nameID 0 copyright + nameID 13 license description).
  • Synthetic code-chart glyphs — derived from Unicode Consortium code charts, released under OFL by the build pipeline.

In practice: you may use Essenfont freely for personal, educational, and non-commercial purposes. Commercial use of the CJK portions requires separate licensing from the FSung project.

Per-donor attribution

Every donor's license is preserved in the font's name table and in the auto-generated LICENSE-SOURCES.md. The build pipeline (in the essenfont source repo) refuses to use any donor outside the declared license policy.
